THE SPECTRUM
Society is like a kaleidoscope - when you look inside, you see many colors. Or it's like a prism that splits light into a spectrum. We live in a dynamic world that reflects a broad spectrum in various aspects such as religion, ideas, beliefs, culture, and status. This is the nature of society, and we cannot avoid it; we must learn to adapt and live within it.
Exposure to this societal spectrum can either shape you or consume you. That’s why we should be wise, as the Word of God says in Matthew 10:16; ‘‘I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.’’ [NIV] We are therefore called to be cautious and discerning in how we witness to society – gentle, yet truthful.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
Martin was born into a family grounded in Christian principles. He was obedient to his parents, respectful to others, and lived according to biblical values. He was also brilliant and hardworking, eventually earning a place at the University of Nairobi. There, he encountered students from various backgrounds and cultures.
Despite his achievements, Martin felt unsatisfied and believed he had never been allowed to choose his own life path. One day, he snapped and declared, ‘‘Maisha ni yangu’’ (This life is mine ). He begun making poor choices, including alcohol abuse and sexual immorality.
Martin had grown up isolation from the broader society. Once exposed to its spectrum, he mistook freedom for indulgence and chased after bodily desires.
The first step in understanding the society is exposure. Paul the Apostle though born a Jew, was called to preach to the Gentiles. His familiarity with Graeco-Roman culture helped him in evangelism, yet he did not conform to idolatrous practices. He wrote to the church of Rome in: Romans 12:2; “ Do not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- his good, pleasing and perfect will. [NIV]
Being exposed to different cultures helps us understand sensitive issues and avoid controversy when witnessing. This, in turn, strengthens the body of Christ and draws others to Him.
